100 years of educational excellence on Eckstein street

Sacred Heart College has a rich historical story that dates back to 1889 when three Marist Brothers arrived in Johannesburg from Cape Town by ox-wagon. The school was in Koch Street and was called Sacred Heart School. It was for boys only.

Over the next 35 years, as Johannesburg grew from a mining town into a busy city, the demand for a good education grew. The building in Koch Street wasn’t big enough, and in 1924, part of the school moved to the outskirts of Johannesburg and became known as Marist Brothers Observatory.

Despite the apartheid laws of the country, the school accepted boys from all nationalities and races. In 1933, the first Chinese students joined the school, and in 1977, the first students of colour were enrolled. This was an important time in the school’s history as it promoted inclusivity and breaking down racial barriers at a time when it was against the law for white children and children of colour to go to the same school.

In 1980, the school became a co-educational school when two girls’ schools joined up with Marist Obs and our name was changed back to Sacred Heart College. The girls were from Holy Family Convent in Yeoville and Ursuline Sisters’ convent, St Angela’s.

The school underwent various changes on campus as the Pre-Primary and Junior Primary Schools, which had been situated in Yeoville, moved across to join the Observatory campus in stages. In 1989, the Intermediate phase building was built and in 1995, a state-of-the-art Pre-Primary School was opened on the Sacred Heart College campus.
